The Concertgebouw presents a Mahler Festival in 2020 100 years after the first Mahler Festival another grand homage to the composer. From 6 to 20 May 2020 The Royal Concertgebouw organizes the third Mahler Festival in her history. By that time it will be exactly 100 years since the first Mahler Festival and 25 years after the legendary Mahler Festival of 1995. The Mahler Festival 2020 will bring together four of the best orchestras in the world that once were conducted by Gustav Mahler himself: the Berliner Philharmoniker, Vienna Philharmonic / Wiener Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The four orchestras will play all of Mahler’s symphonies, including the 10th which he couldn’t complete due to his death in 1911. The Mahler Festival in 2020 will be very extensive. Besides the ten symphonies there will be vocal repertoire and chamber music in the Concertgebouw. Education will get a prominent position and the concert hall’s livestream opportunities will be fully exploited. This way the Mahler Festival can be shared internationally with a broad audience. Various art institutions are approached to deliver a substantive contribution to the Mahler Festival in 2020.
